VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's soccer team battled Trinity Western University to a 1-1 draw in its home-opener, Sept. 8 at Centennial Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a foul disallowed a Trinity Western goal in the 44th minute, the game went into halftime scoreless.
- Catching the Vikes' defence off guard in the 77th minute, the Spartans capitalized to a take a 1-0 lead.
- Corralling the bounce from the TWU keeper's save on a shot from Jordan McKinty, Matthew Pearse found himself in perfect position inside the six-yard box to send the rebound to the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1 in the 87th minute.
WORTH NOTING
- Pearse recorded his first goal as a Vike in the tie.
- Callum Weir tallied a season-high five saves during 90 minutes in net.
- The Vikes edged the Spartans in shots, 11-10, with both sides finishing with six shots on frame. Trinity Western finished with the 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- With the draw, both sides remain unbeaten on the season, with records of 2-0-1 for the Vikes and 3-0-2 for the Spartans.
- The three unbeaten games to open the season for Victoria mark the best three-game start for the Vikes since the 2015 season, matching the 2-0-1 record through three matches.
