Langley, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team fought, but ultimately fell in overtime to Trinity Western University, 92-85, Jan. 13 at the Langley Events Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes put the first points of the game on the board, with a Shadynn Smid jumper putting the visiting side ahead, 10-0, with 7:23 to go in the first quarter.
- With the Spartans ending the first quarter on a 9-2 run, the Vikes' lead narrowed to 25-20 at the end of the first.
- A back-and-forth second quarter, the Vikes remained in front, 46-43, at halftime.
- Though the Vikes were in front for much of the third quarter, Trinity Western scored seven unanswered points over the final two minutes to take a 60-56 lead at the end of the third quarter.
- The Spartans grew their lead to 10 points, 74-64, with just over four minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
- A Griffin Arnatt three sparked a 13-3 Vikes run, ending with a Renoldo Robinson layup with eight seconds left to tie the game, 77-77, and force overtime.
- Finding a brief lead, 80-79 after a Robinson free throw, the Vikes were unable to hold off the Spartans in overtime, ultimately falling, 92-85.
WORTH NOTING
- Robinson led the Vikes with 28 points, adding eight rebounds and a team-high four assists in the win.
- Arnatt tallied 16 points while Ethan Boag finished with 11 to round out the double-digit scoring performances for the Vikes.
- Smid recorded a game-high 10 rebounds, adding six points and two blocks for Victoria.
- The Vikes move to 8-2 on the year after the loss, while the Spartans improve to 2-10 after the win.
