Fourth quarter comeback falls short against Bisons

Winnipeg, Man. – A fourth-quarter comeback effort by the University of Victoria men's basketball team came down to the final minute, but the University of Manitoba took the 83-79 win, Jan. 19, at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manitoba put the first points of the game on the board but was met with a Shadynn Smid dunk and Renoldo Robinson three for a 5-2 lead with 7:06 to play.
  • Finishing on a 7-0 run, Manitoba took a 20-14 lead after the first quarter of action.
  • The Bisons built out a lead in the second quarter, taking a 10-point lead, 27-17, with 6:41 to go.
  • Though the Vikes held the Bisons scoreless for the final two minutes, the Bisons still led 42-31 at the end of the first half.
  • Manitoba remained in front during the third quarter. A Robinson three in the final seconds brought the score to 69-54 Vikes after three quarters of play.
  • An Izzy Helman three with 7:37 to go sparked a 15-0 Vikes run. A layup by Smid capped the run, pulling the Vikes within four, 74-70, leading to Manitoba calling a timeout with 4:53 to play.
  • Two free throws and a three-pointer from Elias Ralph tied the game, 79-79, with 1:03 remaining on the clock.
  • Manitoba added four points in the final 30 seconds to come away with the 83-79 win. 
WORTH NOTING
  • Robinson led the Vikes with 26 points, including a team-high four made three-pointers, along with four rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
  • Smid recorded his first double-double of the year with career-highs in both points (10) and rebounds (13).
  • Ralph added 20 points, nine rebounds, and a team-high four assists for the Vikes.
  • The Vikes sit at 8-3 on the year with the loss, while the Bisons move to 11-4 with the win.
