Winnipeg, Man. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team took the lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, defeating the University of Manitoba 77-42, Jan. 20 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A Mimi Sigue layup put the first points of the game on the board, leading to the Vikes and Bisons going back-and-forth, going through six lead changes before a pair of Abigail Becker free throws gave UVic an 8-7 edge with 2:47 to go in the opening frame.
- A layup from Becker and free throw by Sigue in the final two minutes gave Victoria a 13-9 lead after 10 minutes of play.
- Opening the second quarter with seven-straight points via a Sigue and-one, Karis de Paiva layup and Meike Boerstra jumper, the Vikes took a 20-9 lead with 7:33 remaining until halftime.
- Continuing to build out their lead, the Vikes ended on a 7-0 run, of which five points came from Sierra Reisig. Also holding Manitoba scoreless for the final four minutes of the quarter, the Vikes took a 34-17 lead into the halftime break.
- Keeping the Bisons under control, the Vikes maintained a double-digit lead over Manitoba for the entirety of the third quarter, holding a 56-30 lead going into the final 10 minutes.
- Boerstra gave the Vikes their largest lead of the game with a free throw, 74-38, with 2:23 to go in the fourth quarter.
- Coming away with the win, Boerstra's jumper in the final 20 seconds finalized the win at 77-42 for Victoria.
WORTH NOTING
- The 42 points given up by the Vikes are the fewest allowed to an opponent by UVic this season.
- Tana Pankratz finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, also adding a team-high five assists and three blocks in the win.
- Makena Anderson nearly had a double-double of her own, grabbing a season-high 11 rebounds and finishing with nine points.
- Becker scored a team-high 20 points in the win, adding eight rebounds, three blocks, and one steal in 19 minutes on the floor.
- The Vikes move to 4-8 on the year with the win, while the Bisons drop to 4-12 with the loss.
