Field hockey crowned Canada West champions

Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's field hockey team claimed their sixth-straight and record-tying 25th overall Canada West Championship with a 3-0 blanking of the University of British Columbia, Oct. 20 at Wright Field in the final game of the Canada West season.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Kleinschmidt nets the game-winner
  • The game was scoreless through the first three periods, until a fourth-quarter scramble of Vikes shots at the home net resulted in a penalty stroke. Anni Kleinschmidt expertly placed the ball into the net to give the Vikes the 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.
Langkammer, Adams add insurance goals
  • In the 56th minute, Chloe Langkammer doubled the Vikes' lead, redirecting a cross past the UBC goalkeeper for the 2-0 Victoria lead with four minutes to go.
  • Two minutes later, Amanda Adams sealed the deal with a third goal for the Vikes, finalizing the score at 3-0 in the Canada West championship-deciding game.
Three Vikes named Canada West All-Stars FROM THE FIELD – Head coach Krista Thompson
"First and foremost, I'm super proud of the athletes. When you come out and it's a must-win game, I think that's lots of expectations and lots of, perhaps, unwanted stress, but I think if you stick true to your values, true to your game plan, and true to your preparation, then good things come of it. And that's what happened today."

WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes conference title marks the 25th for the program, and ties for most in Canada West history with UBC. It is also the sixth consecutive Canada West title for the Vikes.
  • Anni Kleinschmidt's goal marks her third of the year, while Amanda Adams scored her fourth and Chloe Langkammer her seventh goal of the season.
  • Anais Chace and the Vikes' defence recorded the team's sixth shutout of the year in the win.
  • The Vikes end the Canada West season with a 5-1-2 record.
