VICTORIA - The University of Victoria field hockey team defeated the University of Calgary, 6-0, Oct. 6 on Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft field to close its home game slate.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes take 2-0 lead at the half
- Needing less than a minute to get on the board, Chloe Langkammer sent her shot from the left side to the back right corner of the net, putting the Vikes ahead, 1-0, in the opening minute of action.
- With two minutes to play in the second quarter, the Vikes capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity. Langkammer fed the ball to Sadie Lee by the right post of the goal, who in turn knocked the ball over the line for the 2-0 Vikes lead that would carry into halftime.
Vikes add four in second half
- Jaden Dawson scored the lone goal of the third quarter, scoring in the 37th minute. One-on-one with the Calgary goalkeeper, Dawson's first shot was saved but deflected right back to her, allowing a quick second swing that made it past the keeper for the 3-0 Vikes lead.
- Libby Hogg added the next goals for the Vikes, both coming in similar fashion on penalty corners. Receiving the ball on the feed in, Hogg took her shots from the top of the circle, scoring in both the 52nd and 59th minutes to put Victoria ahead, 5-0.
- In the final minute of play, Melanie Robertson's pass deflected off the stick of a Calgary defender inside the circle and went in the direction of Katie Bentley, who met the ball and got her shot off in one fluid motion to score her first goal as a Vike and finalize the score at 7-0 in favour of the Vikes.
FROM THE FIELD - Chloe Langkammer
"I think we played really good. We've been working on just building from practices, and I think we executed well and worked as a team. We always come out strong, but it was nice to get on the scoreboard really early. We kept building after that [first goal], but we all worked together as a team and were able to get numbers on the board."
