Vikes post convincing win over Timberwolves

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's basketball team ran away with a 102-48 win over the University of Northern British Columbia, Nov. 8 at CARSA Performance Gym.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes jump to early lead, continue to grow it through first half
  • Opening the game on an 8-0 run, a Shadynn Smid layup and dunk followed by a Griffin Arnatt layup and Diego Maffia jumper put the Vikes in front, 8-0, two minutes into the game.
  • Continuing to expand their lead, the Vikes reached a 10-point lead on another Arnatt layup at the halfway point of the first quarter, 15-5.
  • A final layup from Renoldo Robinson brought the Vikes lead to 28-10 after the opening 10 minutes of play.
  • The Vikes' lead continued to expand in the second quarter, reaching 20 points on a Robinson steal and layup, 44-24, and grew to 47-24 with a three from Robinson in the next Vikes possession.
  • On a 13-0 run over the last two minutes of the second quarter, the Vikes went in to the locker room with a 52-24 halftime lead.
Timberwolves can't catch Vikes
  • Though the Timberwolves held the Vikes to just 19 points in the third quarter, the Vikes defence held UNBC to 12, bringing the score to 71-36 in favour of the Vikes after 30 minutes of play.
  • Keeping their foot on the gas for the final 10 minutes, the Vikes held the Timberwolves to 12 points for the second-straight quarter, bringing the final score to 102-48.
FROM THE COURT - Head coach Murphy Burnatowski
"We're obviously happy with the result. The big thing we've been preaching is to play to our standard no matter what's going on, no matter the score, and sticking to our level of basketball and what we want to produce for when the game ends up close. I think the guys did a good job of playing for 40 minutes today. This was one of our more complete games start to finish, and everyone who got on the court contributed, so as a coach, you have to be happy with that."

WORTH NOTING
  • Renoldo Robinson led the game scoring with 17 points, adding a five steals, one rebound, and one block in the win.
