No. 10 Vikes defeat No. 7 Pronghorns to advance to Canada West quarterfinals

Abbotsford, B.C. - The No. 10 seed University of Victoria women's basketball team captured the program's first playoff win since the 2019-20 season with a 54-43 win over the seventh-seeded University of Lethbridge in the play-in round of the Canada West tournament, Feb. 21 at the UFV Athletic Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lethbridge took the early 5-0 lead before a bucket from Mimi Sigue put the Vikes on the board, bringing the score to 5-2 with 7:59 to play in the first quarter.
  • Going on an 11-0 run over two minutes, jumpers from Karis de Paiva and Makena Anderson, four points from Abigail Becker, and a Tegan MacKinnon three put the Vikes in front, 15-10, with just over two minutes remaining in the opening frame.
  • Lethbridge scored the final basket of the first to bring the Vikes' lead to 15-12 after 10 minutes of play.
  • Though the Pronghorns fought to start the second half and took the lead, 18-17, a jumper from Anderson quickly put the Vikes back on top, 19-18, with 3:16 to play until halftime.
  • A Sigue bucket was met with one by Lethbridge to keep UVic's lead to one, 21-20, with 2:09 to go in the second.
  • Five points from Becker via two jumpers and a free throw extended Victoria's lead to 26-20 with 22 seconds still on the clock, but the Pronghorns would score once more in the final seconds to bring the score to 26-22 in favour of the Vikes at halftime.
  • Although Lethbridge pulled within three in the opening minutes of the third, the Vikes held their lead the entire frame, helped by a three from de Paiva and pair of free throws from Tana Pankratz for their largest lead to that point, 41-32, with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • Another set of free throws by Pankratz sealed the third quarter score at 43-35 with Victoria in front.
  • Taking a 10-point lead to open the fourth quarter, Sigue knocked down a jumper for the 45-35 Vikes advantage with 9:07 to go.
  • Holding the Pronghorns scoreless for the first near-six minutes of the final frame, UVic went ahead 50-35 in that time on five Pankratz points before a Lethbridge bucket made the score 50-37 with 4:03 to play.
  • An eight-point Pronghorn run brought Lethbridge within seven, 50-43, before a pair of Anderson free throws and a Sierra Reisig jumper brought the Vikes' lead back to double-digits, 54-43, with 44 seconds left on the clock.
  • With no more points from either side in the final seconds, the Vikes claimed the win to advance to the quarterfinal round, 54-43.
