Abbotsford, B.C. – The 10th-seeded University of Victoria women's basketball team's incredible playoff run came to end with a 62-41 loss to the four seed University of the Fraser Valley in the bronze medal match, Feb. 25 at the UFV Athletic Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A Tana Pankratz jumper put the first points of the game on the board, giving the Vikes a 2-0 lead with 7:52 to go in the first.
- The Cascades scored the next 11 points before Mimi Sigue was successful on two free throw attempts to bring the score to 11-4 in favour of UFV at the 3:17 mark of the frame.
- UFV grabbed the final points of the first quarter to hold an 18-4 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
- The Cascades' lead grew to 20 points, 25-5, at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter.
- Three sets of Vikes free throws from Pankratz, Sierra Reisig and Sigue put double-digits on the board for the Vikes, bringing UFV's lead to 34-11 with 1:33 to play in the first half.
- Two more free throws from Pankratz with 16 seconds still on the clock followed by a UFV three at the buzzer brought the halftime score to 39-13 in favour of the Cascades.
- An 8-0 run created some momentum for Victoria, coming via Tegan MacKinnon three, Abigail Becker jumper, and Pankratz three to bring the score to 47-21 with 3:49 to go in the third.
- A jumper by Pankratz marked the final points of the third quarter, resulting in the Vikes outscoring the Cascades 13-12 in the frame for a score of 51-26 in favour of UFV at the end of the third.
- A quick 5-0 Vikes run on a Pankratz three and Brooke Kendal steal-and-score made the score 55-31 with 8:21 to play in the fourth quarter.
- Brooklyn White's jumper at the 5:56 mark brought UFV's lead back down to 20, 60-40.
- Though the Vikes outscored UFV for the second-straight quarter, 15-11, it was not enough to overcome the first-half deficit, resulting in a 62-41 win for the Cascades.
WORTH NOTING
- Pankratz led the Vikes with 19 points, and was one rebound short of a double-double with nine rebounds. Her rebounds and four steals marked team-highs for the Vikes.
- Sigue added eight points and eight rebounds for Victoria, tallying a team-high two assists as well as one block in 23 minutes on the floor.
- Becker had a Vikes-high two blocks in the bronze medal game, adding two points and four rebonds for UVic.
- Plagued by a field goal scoring drought for the first two and half quarters, the Vikes went 1-24 from field goal range to start the game until MacKinnon's three in the third.
- The Vikes end the year with a 12-12 overall record and 2-2 mark in playoff action, including making their first Canada West semifinal game appearance since 2015.
