Vikes best Cascades to close weekend

Abbotsford, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's soccer team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley, 4-1, Sept. 15, at Rotary Stadium.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Nicholas gets the Vikes on the board
  • Sophie Fingarson got a hold of the UFV goal kick near midfield and sent it back towards the Cascades goal. The pass met Ruby Nicholas at the top of the box, who drove into the box and fired the ball over the line, putting the Vikes ahead 1-0 Vikes in the 28th minute.
McLeish scores her first of the year
  • After an initial shot by Taiya Scorey was saved, the deflection bounced between Scorey and Sophie Murphy over to Brianne McLeish, who got a foot on it to send it past the Fraser Valley goalkeeper for the 2-0 Vikes lead in the 40th minute.
Vikes extend lead with penalty kick
  • A handball called against the Cascades in the box gave Victoria a penalty kick, taken by Nicholas. Keeping it on the ground, Nicholas sent it to the bottom right of the goal for the 3-0 Vikes lead in the 58th minute.
Cascades score, Scorey responds
  • The Cascades scored in the 69th minute to get on the board, but Scorey responded for the Vikes five minutes later. Scorey launched a free kick from 40 yards out straight to the back of the net to put the Vikes back up by three, 4-1, in the 74th minute.
WORTH NOTING
  • Ruby Nicholas' third and fourth goals of the season move her into a tie for second-most in the conference. Her seven total points are now tied for most in the league.
  • The Vikes did not allow a shot to the Cascades in the first 45 minutes of play.
  • Victoria tallied 19 shots to the Cascades' six, and ended with an 8-6 edge over UFV in shots on goal.
  • Kayley Lidstone recorded three saves in the win.
  • The Vikes move to 3-1-1 on the year with the win, while UFV drops to 1-3-0 with the loss.
