VICTORIA - The University of Victoria field hockey team fought to a 0-0 draw with the University of British Columbia, Sept. 21 at the Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field. The Thunderbirds claimed the extra point with a 3-2 shootout win.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
First half ends scoreless
- The Vikes and Thunderbirds were scoreless after the first 30 minutes of play.Â
- UBC had two corner opportunities in the first two periods that were well-defended by the Vikes to keep the visiting side off the board.
- Victoria earned their first corner in the second period, after Josie Dunham drove into the circle and was fouled. However, the UBC defence kept the ball away from the net and the game remained scoreless at the end of the period.
Vikes nearly breakthrough in the second half
- Maeve Connorton and Julia Boraston each had a look in the third period, but Connorton's shot went off the UBC defender's leg and the UBC goalkeeper managed to get a foot on Boraston's shot to keep the game scoreless after three periods.
- Amanda Adams nearly put the Vikes on the board in the fourth quarter, but her shot from the right side went just wide and the score remained 0-0. In the final minutes, Sadie Lee stole the ball and began to drive down the field, but lost the ball trying to avoid the UBC defenders. With no goals coming through in the final minutes, the game ended in a 0-0 tie and went to a shootout.

WORTH NOTING
- With the game ending in a 0-0 tie, the Vikes have not allowed a goal in regulation through three games.
- The scoreless draw is the first for the Vikes since Oct. 21, 2023, also against UBC at "Buzz" Field. The Vikes then came away with a 4-3 shootout win.
- Victoria and UBCÂ each move to 2-0-1 on the season.
