Field hockey takes shootout win in game two against UBC

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria and University of British Columbia field hockey teams were once again tied at the end of regulation, but this time it was the Vikes that came away with the shootout win, 1-1 (4-2 SO), Sept. 22 at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
UBC gets on the board first
  • The Thunderbirds scored the first goal of the weekend, finding the back of the net in the 19th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Dunham pulls the Vikes even
  • Seven minutes later, the Vikes equalized on a penalty corner. After the ball was fed in to Libby Hogg at the top of the circle, she quickly sent it to Josie Dunham just off to the left of the goal. A tap-in from Dunham pulled the Vikes even, 1-1, in the second quarter.
Chace makes two stops to secure shootout win FROM THE FIELD - Melanie Robertson & Anais Chace
On the game:
Robertson - "We just took yesterday with a grain of salt and built on it and fixed the little things that we noticed when we were breaking down yesterday. We definitely tried to apply those today and ended up with a shootout win, so we'll take it."

Chace - "I was happy with how, even though they [UBC] scored a bit earlier, we just kept fighting and kept going, and I was really proud of the team in that way. We never gave up which is really nice to see. We all just work for each other, and the outcome today was what we wanted at the end."

On the mindset after going scoreless in the game prior:
Robertson
- "I think we always know coming in that UBC is going to be a tough opponent, so we don't come in necessarily expecting to score. We just focus on capitalizing on every single chance we get and try to take advantage of those opportunities."

Chace - "As much as we know and want to come out strong, the first game against UBC is always almost a 'trial run' in a sense with us getting our footing. The second is game is a lot more of us coming out a bit calmer, a bit more encouraging and uplifting of each other, and being able to support each other better instead of being a little frantic in the first game while we're trying to get a sense of them."

On if having two shootouts in a row makes a difference in knowing what the opponent will do:
Robertson -
"As a goalie maybe not, but as a shooter it does a little bit because you get to know what the goalie does and plan what you're going to do a bit better."
Chace [GK] - "No, not at all. Players always switch it up on the second day unless their strategy worked absolutely perfectly on the first day. But a lot of players will try something new the next time, so I just keep my mind blank each time."

WORTH NOTING
  • Josie Dunham's goal marked her third of the year, bringing her into a tie for most goals in Canada West this season.
  • The goal allowed to UBC was the Vikes' first goal conceded in regulation this season.
  • Victoria and UBC both move to 2-0-2 on the year following the tie.
