Nicholas' brace sends the Vikes past Cascades

VICTORIA – A 90th minute header by Ruby Nicholas in the 90th minute pushed the University of Victoria women's soccer team past the Fraser Valley Cascades, 2-1, Sept. 27 at Centennial Stadium.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Nicholas' corner puts the Vikes in front
  • After a scoreless first half, the Vikes got on the board first in the 58th minute. Ruby Nicholas took the corner kick for the Vikes and curved it perfectly into the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead.
Cascades tie in the 72nd
  • Fraser Valley's drive into the box in 72nd minute resulted in the game-tying goal, 1-1.
Nicholas nets the game-winner, Lidstone keeps it that way
  • In the 90th minute, Nicholas met the cross from Adrianna Hilton with her head, sending the ball past the UFV goalkeeper for the second time to put the Vikes ahead, 2-1, heading into extra time.
  • The Cascades were given a corner on their next possession following the Vikes goal. Getting a shot off in front of the net, Kayley Lidstone dove and got a hand on the ball to make the save and seal the win for the Vikes, 2-1.
FROM THE PITCH – Ruby Nicholas
On the game:
"It was exciting playing them at home. I think we knew at this point in the season that they would come out hard because it's always such a contest between [Canada West] pacific division foes. Credit to them, they defended pretty well in the first half, and the second half as well. At this point in the season, we really need those three points, so it's nice to be able to get those."

On if having played UFV two weeks ago is useful in finding scoring chances:
"A little bit, just because we play all these teams so often. It's nice when you do understand a bit more how to breach their defence and things like that because you played them recently."

WORTH NOTING
  • Ruby Nicholas increases her season goal total to six, moving into a tie for most in the conference.
  • Nicholas has now scored two goals in both games against the Cascades this season.
  • Kayley Lidstone recorded five saves in the win.
  • Victoria finished with a 13-9 advantage in shots and 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Vikes improve to 4-1-3 on the season with the win, while the Cascades drop to 2-5 on the year.
