Calgary, Alta. - The defending national champion University of Victoria field hockey team opened its 2024 campaign with a 6-0 shutout at the University of Calgary, Sept. 7.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes strike twice in the first five minutes
- Chloe Langkammer opened the season scoring for the Vikes, getting the visiting side on the board in the third minute.
- Amanda Adams put Victoria ahead 2-0 with a goal in the fifth minute.
Langkammer adds one more before halftime
- Langkammer found the back of the net for a second time on a Vikes penalty corner opportunity, putting UVic up 3-0 in the 26th minute.
Three goals mark fourth quarter scoring
- After a scoreless third quarter, Madeline Mittelsteadt found the back of the net in the 48th minute to give the Vikes a 4-0 advantage.
- On a Vikes penalty corner in the 56th minute, Josie Dunham connected for the goal to bring UVic's lead up to 5-0.
- The final goal of the day was scored by Vikes rookie Sadie Lee, sealing the 6-0 win for Victoria in the 60th minute.
WORTH NOTING
- Chloe Langkammer recorded two-thirds of her 2023 goal scoring production in game one of the season (three total goals in 2023).
- The six goals scored by UVic mark the most scored by the team since the 2022 season, a 7-0 win against the Dinos Oct. 16 at the Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft field.
- Sadie Lee made her first career start for the Vikes, also scoring her first goal in the blue and gold in her debut. First years Ava Winter and Carmen Adrian also made their Vikes debut, first seeing time in the fifth and sixth minutes, respectively.
- Victoria opens the year 1-0, while Calgary starts the season 0-1.
