VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's basketball team held off Trinity Western University to claim a 75-63 win, Jan. 10, inside CARSA Performance Gym.
WORTH NOTING
Spartans hold lead after one quarter
- Though the Vikes scored the first point of the game on an Ethan Boag free throw, the Spartans scored the next 10 points to take a 10-1 lead with 6:11 to go in the opening quarter.
- Holding TWU scoreless for nearly five minutes to close the first, a Griffin Arnatt and-one brought the score to 15-12 in favour of Trinity Western at the end of the first.
Vikes take the lead at the half
- The Vikes began to claw back in the second quarter, taking the lead with 56 seconds to play, 33-31, on a Diego Maffia three-pointer.
- Hitting a second three-pointer at the buzzer, Maffia gave Victoria a 36-32 lead at the halftime break.
Vikes close out second half for the win
- Back-and-forth during the third quarter, the Spartans came back within as little as one point, 47-46, but a three from Arnatt pushed the Vikes' lead back to four, 50-46, and helped keep the home side in front for the remainder of the frame.
- A Geoffrey James jumper was met with a Spartan bucket in the final minute of the third to bring UVic's lead to 54-50 after 30 minutes of action.
- The Vikes added on to their lead in the fourth, with a three from Aaron Tesfagiorgis followed by a Renoldo Robinson jumper putting Victoria ahead by double-digits, 64-54, with five minutes to play.
- James knocked down a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the game to seal the Vikes' win at 75-63.
WORTH NOTING
- Renoldo Robinson led the Vikes with 17 points, adding eight rebounds and four assists in the win.
- Shadynn Smid led the Vikes with 10 rebounds, also tallying nine points a a team-high two steals.
- Griffin Arnatt finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist for the Vikes.
- The Vikes move to 9-0 on the year with the win, while TWU drops to 4-6.
