VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to Trinity Western University, 68-60, after a second-half comeback by the Spartans, Jan. 10 at CARSA Performance Gym.

Late first quarter run gives Victoria the lead
- Beginning to cut in to Trinity Western's early lead, a pair of free throws and a jumper from Abigail Becker pulled the Vikes within one, 7-6, with 6:15 to go in the opening frame. Met by a TWU three, the Spartans went back ahead by four, 10-6, 30 seconds later.
- A three from Tana Pankratz followed by a Karis de Paiva layup gave the Vikes the 11-10 lead, which soon increased to 13-10 on a pair of Pankratz free throws with two minutes to go.
- Kocking down a three with six seconds on the game clock, de Paiva gave Victoria the 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Vikes stay in front in second
- Expanding their lead in the second quarter, the Vikes grew their lead to 10 points, 26-16, on a Mimi Sigue jumper with 4:22 to go.
- Sigue matched a jumper from Trinity Western in the final eight seconds of the quarter to bring UVic's lead to 35-26 at the half.
Spartans claw back in third, pull ahead in fourth for win
- Trinity Western began to narrow the Vikes' lead in the third quarter, coming within two points. However, two Pankratz free throws with six seconds left followed by a steal by Joaleah Tupas-Singh led to a Meike Boerstra layup at the buzzer to give Victoria the six-point cushion, 50-44, at the end of the third quarter.
- Though the Vikes matched the opening baskets by the Spartans in the first three minutes of the frame, the Spartans took advantage of a near four-minute scoreless streak for the Vikes to go ahead, 57-56, with three and a half minutes to play.
- Victoria was unable to regain the lead over the final minutes, resulting in the 68-60 victory for Trinity Western.
WORTH NOTING
- Tana Pankratz led the Vikes with 16 points, adding four rebounds and three assists.
- Abigail Becker and Mimi Sigue contributed double-digit scoring performances with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
- Becker secured her fourth double-double of the season with 13 boards to go along with her 13 points. She added team-highs in assists (5), blocks (5), and steals (2) for the Vikes.
- Victoria moves to 4-5 on the year, while Trinity Western improves to 6-4 following the game.
