Women's basketball closes road trip with victory over TRU

Kamloops, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team defeated Thompson Rivers University, 64-45, Jan. 18 at the Tournament Capital Centre to close its weekend split trip.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes erase eight-point deficit in first quarter
  • Mimi Sigue and Abigail Becker scored in the first minute of play to give Victoria a quick 4-0 lead, but the WolfPack scored the next 12 points of the contest to take a 12-4 lead with just over six minutes to go in the first quarter.
  • Beginning to close the gap, a Becker layup followed by a Tana Pankratz three was only matched by a single free throw from Thompson Rivers, bringing the Vikes within four, 13-9, with 5:15 to play.
  • Four-straight points from Sigue on a layup and pair of free throws tied the game, 16-16, and was followed by a Tegan Michel layup to put the Vikes in front, 18-16, with 52 seconds still on the clock in the first.
  • Michel was successful on the free throw for the and-one to bring the first quarter score to 19-16 in favour of the Vikes.
TRU attempts to comeback, stopped by Vikes in second
  • Five Vikes points on a Sigue layup and Pankratz three opened the second quarter scoring, bringing the Vikes' lead to 24-16 and leading to a Thompson Rivers timeout with 8:43 to go.
  • Capitalizing on a near four-minute stretch that saw the Vikes score only three points via free throws, the WolfPack pulled back within one, 27-26. A jumper from Natalie Allison got a field goal on the board for the Vikes, 29-26, with 2:01 to go in the second.
  • A layup from Jenna Talib and four points from Becker in the final two minutes gave Victoria a 35-26 lead at halftime.
Vikes keep TRU at double-digit distance to close out win
  • Though the third quarter had just 21 points scored between the two sides, the Vikes managed to add five points to their lead after outscoring TRU 13-8 to take a 48-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • 10 points is the closest the WolfPack got to the Vikes in fourth quarter, 53-43, with 10 minutes to go. However, the Vikes would then go on an 11-2 run, capped by an Allison three, to claim the 64-45 win at the final buzzer. 
WORTH NOTING
  • Abigail Becker recorded her fourth double-double of the season, leading the Vikes in both points (18) and rebounds (12).
  • Mimi Sigue recorded her first double-double of the year with a 14-point, 10-rebound night, and tied for the team-high with three steals.
  • Tana Pankratz finished with 16 points, including a team-high four three-pointers, along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the win.
  • Joaleah Tupas-Singh tallied a season-high three steals in the win, tying for most on the team. She also led the team with three assists and added three rebounds.
  • The Vikes move to 7-5 on the year with the win, while TRU falls to 0-13.
