VICTORIA - Rugby is a game of grit, teamwork, and occasionally some bloodshed. But this year, the University of Victoria men's rugby team is channeling their strength in numbers to give something far more valuable than tries or tackles—they're giving back by giving blood.
On Wednesday, February 5, the UVic Department of Athletics and Recreation is gearing up for the third annual
Vikes Giving Day, —a fundraising initiative dedicated to celebrating and supporting varsity and club programs as they pursue excellence.
As part of Vikes Giving Day, the men's rugby team is turning the traditional fundraiser on its head. Instead of simply asking for financial support, they're rolling up their sleeves—literally—and aiming to donate over 40 pints of blood by February 5.
In alignment with UVic's purpose, inspired by honouring place, the Vikes are committed to a community-minded, globally engaged approach that transforms ideas into meaningful impact—in this case, addressing Canada's critical blood shortage.
"We're always looking for ways that we can give back since we rely on so much support from the community. Something we talk about with the team is the power of a network; and as one of the largest groups on campus, how can we use our network to truly make a difference," said
Scott Manning, UVic men's rugby head coach.
Inspired by the 1972-73 men's rugby team who organized a blood drive to support their original tour to Argentina, the Vikes revived the tradition last year. Their efforts raised $30,000 and resulted in 80 units of blood donated. The team hopes to build on that success, turning the initiative into an event that will inspire thousands of people to donate blood annually.
"While many fundraisers involve financial contributions, this initiative allows us to make a direct and life-saving impact. Knowing that each donation can help save or improve someone's life gives this fundraiser a deeper purpose. It's a chance to come together as a team, not just on the field but in a way that supports people who need it most," said men's rugby player and team fundraising lead Ian Smith.
"Leading this initiative has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It's shown me the power of teamwork beyond rugby, rallying the guys to commit to something so impactful has strengthened our sense of unity and purpose," continued Smith.
Each donation has the potential to impact three patients in need, and with such an extensive athlete roster, it can genuinely make a difference. The team aims to contribute more than 40 pints before Giving Day
on February 5. Every drop counts, so join the cause and watch your generosity multiply.
The two ways people can support:
- Pledge a donation per pint that we give: PLEDGE HERE
- People can join the team and donate blood: JOIN OUR TEAM
