Lethbridge, Alta. – A big first quarter run helped the University of Victoria men's basketball team past the University of Lethbridge, 83-75, in a road win Jan. 31.

Vikes hold double-digit lead at end of first and second quarters
- Trading the first four baskets of the night for a 4-4 scoreline, an 8-0 run for the Vikes on layups by Sam Maillet, Ryan Gallagher, Geoffrey James and Ethan Boag put the Vikes in front, 12-4, with 5:41 to go in the opening quarter.
- After a Pronghorn basket, the Vikes went on a 14-0 run, capped by a Maillet free throw for the 20-point lead, 26-6, with 1:30 still on the clock.
- Lethbridge scored the final six points of the frame, but the Vikes' 52.4% (11-21) shooting in the quarter kept them comfortably in front, 26-12, after the opening 10 minutes.
- Victoria maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second quarter. Six-straight points from the Pronghorns in the final two minutes pulled the home side within eight, 43-35, with 45 seconds to play. However, James hit a three at the buzzer to put the Vikes back up by double figures, 46-35, at halftime.
Pronghorns make late push, Vikes thwart comeback attempt
- The Vikes maintained a double-digit lead through the entirety of the third quarter, holding a 65-53 lead entering the final period of action.
- A 12-5 run for the Pronghorns opened the fourth quarter, bringing the home side within five, 70-65, with 6:43 to play.
- Five-straight points from Renoldo Robinson brought the Vikes' lead back up to 10, 75-65, with just under three and a half minutes to play.
- A three from Boag gave the Vikes their largest lead of the quarter, 81-67, with 2:11 still on the clock. Though the Pronghorns hit a three at the buzzer, the Vikes took the 83-75 win to open the weekend series.
WORTH NOTING
- Geoffrey James led the Vikes in scoring with 22 points, adding two rebounds, two steals, and two assists in the win.
- Ethan Boag posted his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, also contributing one block for the Vikes.
- Ryan Gallagher posted a career-high 18 points in the win, adding three rebounds and a team-high three assists in 27 minutes on the floor.
- The Vikes improve to 15-0 on the year with the win, while the Pronghorns move to 10-5.
