Calgary, AB – The University of Victoria men's soccer team travelled to Calgary to take on Lethbridge University in the first round of the Canada West Championships. The Vikes were victorious as they defeated the Pronghorns 1-1 (Penalty kicks: 4-1) in a penalty shootout, Oct. 24 at Mount Royal University.
Lethbridge broke the scoreless tie.
Off a free kick in the 25
th minute, Lethbridge buried the first goal of the game. The goal came as the Pronghorns were awarded a free kick just outside the Vikes' box. The free kick went through a crowd in front of the net and was tipped past the Vikes keeper.
Vikes struck back
The Vikes finally broke through in the 60
th minute of the match.
Aiden Grew levelled the scoring as he battled through contact in front of the Pronghorns' net and put home the Vikes' first of the game. Grew's game-tying goal was assisted by
Yassin Guitouni as his pass allowed Grew to get a clean look at the net.
Extra time couldn't decide a winner.
The game needed extra time, as neither team could find the back of the net for the elusive game-winning goal. Extra time was played mostly in the midfield as both teams fought for a dangerous scoring opportunity. Neither team could get a real chance on net, and the game headed for penalty kicks.
Penalty Shootout
All four of the Vikes' shooters,
Matthew Pearse,
Yassin Guitouni,
Archie Tugwell and Alexander Moddy, scored on their penalty kick attempts.
Callum Weir came up big for the Vikes with two big saves on the Spartans' first two attempts.
The Vikes will advance to play Sunday, Oct. 26, in the Canada West Semi-Finals at 1 p.m. MT.
