Charlottetown, PEI – The University of Victoria women's field hockey team took on York University in the U SPORTS Championship gold medal game, Nov. 2. The Vikes were defeated 1-0 and crowned silver medalists.
 
Scoreless first half

• The Vikes and Lions continued their scoreless standoff from their round robin game as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half.
• Both teams' defences were up for every challenge as both squads have yet to allow a goal in the three games they have each played at the U SPORTS Championship.

 
The third quarter remained a stalemate.

• The second half started with both teams unable to find any offensive consistency. The defensive pressure each rush would extinguish any scoring opportunity.
• In the last two minutes of the quarter, the Vikes began to turn up the offensive intensity. Their efforts were evident in multiple shots at the net, but they were blocked or went wide.

 
The Lions broke the scoreless tie with time winding down in the fourth quarter.

• With three minutes left in the game, the Lions found the back of the net and broke the Vikes' scoreless streak, taking a 1-0 lead.
• The Vikes pulled the goalie with two minutes left as they looked to find the same magic they had in their Canada West Championship game comeback. Their last push was withstood, and York prevailed.

 
Notables

• Ava Winter was awarded Nike Player of the Game for her stellar defensive efforts.
• Julia Boraston and Libby Hogg were honoured by being named tournament all-stars.

 
The Vikes will end their successful season with a Canada West gold medal and U SPORTS Championship silver medal.
