Women's basketball falls to Heat to close Canada West season

Kelowna, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of British Columbia Okanagan, 97-68, Feb. 15 to close the 2024-25 Canada West slate.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes lead after first quarter of action
  • The Vikes opened the game with a 5-0 lead on a Meike Boerstra jumper and Jade Dittmer three over the first minute of action.
  • UBCO got on the board and took a 7-6 lead, but a pair of Mimi Sigue free throws followed by a Jenna Talib jumper put the Vikes back on top, 10-7, with 6:58 to go in the opening frame.
  • The two sides continued to trade baskets until the final minute of the quarter, when jumpers from Abigail Becker and Jade Dittmer put the Vikes ahead, 22-17, with 31 seconds to play.
  • UBCO scored the final basket of the first to bring the score to 22-19 in favour of the Vikes after 10 minutes of play.
Heat takes lead in second; remains in front through second half
  • After an opening jumper from Makena Anderson, the Heat scored the next eight points to take a 27-24 lead with 7:45 to play until halftime.
  • UBCO remained in the lead for the remainder of the second quarter, holding a 41-33 lead over the Vikes at halftime.
  • The Vikes were unable to catch the Heat in the second half, being outscored 56-25 over the two periods and ultimately falling, 97-68.

  • Makena Anderson led the Vikes with 14 points, while Bella Graves tallied a season-high 13 points for the Vikes.
  • Abigail Becker posted a team-high nine rebounds, and added seven points for Victoria.
  • The Vikes close the season with a 12-8 record in Canada West play.
