Men's basketball opens U SPORTS Final 8 against Bishop's

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's basketball team will take on Bishop's University in the quarterfinal round of the INDOCHINO U SPORTS Final 8, presented by Victory Creative Group, March 13 at the University of British Columbia's War Memorial Gym.

LAST MEETINGS
  • The Vikes and Gaiters have met only once previously at the U SPORTS national championship. During the 1997-98 Final 8, Bishop's claimed a tight 78-76 win over the Vikes in the semifinal round.
TEAM NOTES
  • The Vikes enter the national championship as the fourth overall seed, holding a 22-1 record following a 20-0 Canada West season and 2-1 conference playoff capped by a 97-85 win over Manitoba to capture the Canada West bronze medal.
  • Victoria will make its fourth-straight appearance at the U SPORTS Final 8 in 2024-25, dating back to the 2021-22 season. It is the 28th appearance at the national championship in program history. The Vikes have finished fifth (2023-24), fourth (2022-23), and sixth (2021-22) in their previous three national championship appearances. 
  • Bishop's, the fifth seed and RSEQ champion, is 14-2 on the season after a 12-2 conference season and 2-0 mark in the RSEQ playoffs, defeating Laval in the championship final to earn their berth to the U SPORTS Final 8.
  • The winner of the Vikes versus Gaiters matchup will face the winner of top-seeded Ottawa versus eighth-seeded Concordia in the semifinals on Friday, March 14.
  • Victoria enters the tournament with a pair of conference award winners: Defensive Player of the Year Sam Maillet and Coach of the Year Murphy Burnatowski, as well as Canada West All-Stars Renoldo Robinson (first team) and Ethan Boag (second team).
STAT NOTABLES
  • Renoldo Robinson leads the Vikes in scoring with a 15.6 points per game average. Ethan Boag and Shadynn Smid round out the top three at 13.3 and 10.6 per game.
  • Boag, Smid, and Sergio Pereira are all tied as top rebounders on the Vikes with a 5.5 per game average.
