Vikes secure 2-1 win over UBCO

Kelowna, BC - The University of Victoria men's soccer team triumphed 2-1 over the University of British Columbia Okanagan, Aug. 29 at Nonis Sport Field.

Vikes and Heat scoreless in first half 
  • Matthew Pearse had the first shot on goal of the game in the 13th minute for the Vikes, though the first half ended in a 0-0 draw.
Vikes strike first, Heat come back to tie 
  • Ole Cameron made the breakthrough in the 70th minute, putting the Vikes ahead 1-0.
  • The Heat responded swiftly in the 75th minute, leveling the score to 1-1.
Vikes take the final goal
  • The Vikes fought back in the 87th minute, with rookie Elliot Lupton scoring the game winning goal, assisted by Evan Larson, to seal a 2-1 victory.
Notable
  • Ole Cameron and Matthew Pearse had strong performances, leading the team with the most shot attempts (two each) and shots on goal (one each). 
  • Yassin Guitouni came close to breaking the game open in the 66th minute with a powerful shot on goal.
  • Goalkeeper Callum Weir had a solid performance, leading the game with three saves to UBCO's two.
  • The Vikes outshot the Heat 9-7, showcasing their offensive pressure.
  • With the win, the Vikes improve to a record of 2-0-1, while UBCO starts the season at 0-1-0.
The Vikes head to Kamloops tomorrow, August 30, to play Thompson Rivers University at 7:30pm at Hillside Stadium.
