Anderson shoots lights out in big win over WolfPack

Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria women's basketball team won their ninth game of the year in a 75-33 win over Thompson Rivers University, January 24 at CARSA Performance Gym.

SHOOT FOR THE CURE

Raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society during the annual U SPORTS "Shoot for the Cure" campaign, the Vikes used tonight's game to collect "Stats for the Cure," thanks to a generous donation from Heart Pharmacy and an anonymous donor. Earning $100 for every made Vikes three-pointer, and $25 for every Vikes rebound and made free-throw, UVic raised the maximum $2000 after recording eight made three-pointers, 11 free throws, and 45 rebounds in the win.

The Vikes took control early, exerting their will on both ends of the floor.
  • In her return to the starting lineup, Abigail Becker's presence was evident early on. Becker's immediate impact was felt as she contributed eight points and four rebounds to push the Vikes to a 14-5 first quarter.
  • The tandem of Abigail Becker, Mimi Sigue, and Makena Anderson was cleaning the glass, grabbing eight first-quarter rebounds to propel the Vikes to a hot start.
  • The Vikes held Thompson Rivers to single-digit scoring in both of the first two quarters, marking their best defensive half of the season.
  • Makena Anderson caught fire late in the second quarter, hitting back-to-back-to-back threes, pushing the Vikes' lead to 23 points.
  • Anderson, Becker, and the squad were firing on all cylinders, taking a 35-12 lead at halftime, closing a dominant first half.

More of the same in the second half.
  • The Vikes kept the pressure on in the second half, outscoring the WolfPack 19-10 in the third and 21-11 in the fourth.
  • Victoria was able to show off their depth as bench players were able to get extended playing minutes with the large lead.

Notables
  • Makena Anderson set a new career high as she buried six threes. Anderson's 20 points led the Vikes in scoring in the big win.
  • The Vikes shot 50% from beyond the arc, marking a new season-high from long range.
  • The Vikes complete the weekend sweep, improving to 9-8 as we near the end of the season. The Wolfpack fall to 6-12 with the loss.

The Vikes will travel to Kelowna to take on the University of British Columbia Okanagan on January 30 at 5:30 p.m.
