First half comeback sparks Vikes first win of the season

Victoria, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team captured its first Canada West victory of the season on Friday night, defeating the UNBC Timberwolves 75-53 at CARSA Performance Gym.

The Vikes shook off a slow start to take control of the game.
  • UNBC came out firing offensively, scoring 28 first-quarter points to build a 10-point lead after the opening frame.
  • Victoria settled in during the second quarter and responded with a 23-11 run to erase the deficit. The run was capped off by a late basket from Adelle Bergmann that brought the Vikes level heading into halftime.

The Vikes took over after the break.
  • Victoria held UNBC to just 14 points over the final 20 minutes, tightening up defensively and controlling the glass.
  • Bergmann delivered a breakout performance in her first season as a Vike, leading the team offensively while helping spark both the comeback and the second-half surge.
  • Avery Geddes played all 40 minutes, providing a steady presence on both ends of the floor as the Vikes pulled away.

Victoria found contributions throughout the lineup despite a shortened bench.
  • Makena Anderson scored 16 points before fouling out with seven minutes remaining in regulation. With Anderson unavailable down the stretch and an already short bench entering the contest, Victoria was forced into a seven-player rotation for the closing stages.
  • Bella Graves provided an important spark off the bench, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds while shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
  • The Vikes dominated the boards 51-26, including 23 offensive rebounds, and forced 24 UNBC turnovers.

Notables
  • With the win, the Vikes improve to 1-2 on the season while the Timberwolves are still searching for their first win at 0-3.

The Vikes return to CARSA Performance Gym on Nov. 7 for the second game of their weekend series against the UNBC Timberwolves. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
