Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Chase Carter

Leach plays hero in 1-0 win over Spartans

Langley, BC – The University of Victoria men's soccer team defeated Trinity Western University 1-0 on Sept. 18 at Chase Office Field
 
The game was deadlocked through 65 minutes.
  • A tightly contested opening half saw neither team find the back of the net. The defensive units were effective in disrupting the offensive flow, dismantling any scoring opportunities.
 
Vikes finally find an elusive goal.
  • Archie Tugwell and Evan Larson battled to get the Vikes a good look from inside the box, only for the ball to be deflected to Griffin Leach on the right side of the net. Leach blasted a shot from a tough angle, and the velocity was too much for the goalkeeper to handle as the shot deflected off his gloves and into the top corner.
  • The goal proved to be the winner as Victoria defended the lead through the final 23 minutes, and Callum Weir turned aside both of the Spartans' shots on target to earn the clean sheet.
 
Notables:
  • The Vikes successfully avenged their previous loss to TWU and move to 2-2 on the season. The Spartans fall to 2-3-1.
  • The clean sheet is Callum Weir's second of the year.
 
The Vikes will travel to Vancouver to take on the undefeated UBC Thunderbirds on Sep. 19.
