Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria women's field hockey team tied the UBC Thunderbirds 1-1 on Sep. 27 at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field.
 
Scoreless first quarter.

• To start, both offences struggled to solve the opponent's backline to create dangerous scoring opportunities. Each team had one shot on net, but both goalkeepers, Anais Chace and Robyn Goh, made key saves to keep the first quarter scoreless

 
Vikes created their first quality scoring chance but couldn't finish it.

• Nearing the end of the second quarter, the Thunderbirds found themselves pinned in the defensive end with the Vikes threatening. The Vikes earned a pair of penalty corners, the first creating the best chance of the game thus far.  The ball got past goalkeeper Pascalle Pottier, but her defenders were able to stop the ball from crossing the line. Both teams remained scoreless as the game hit halftime.

 
Vikes broke the scoreless tie.

• Victoria began to string together offensive pushes that forced the Thunderbirds to sit back and defend. Rebecca Stone created the first scoring chance of the quarter as she blasted one on net off a penalty corner. Robyn Goh stood tall to turn aside the quality opportunity.
• With just over two minutes remaining in the third, Maeve Connorton's offensive determination earned the Vikes a penalty corner. Off the corner, Antonia Diuana Hodar got a shot off through a crowd of defenders and fooled the keeper, placing the ball in the bottom corner of the net. Antonia's first of the season broke the scoreless tie and put the Vikes ahead with one quarter of action remaining.

 
The Thunderbirds tied it up in the final minute.

• With the game nearing an end, the Thunderbirds found an equalizer. Off a penalty corner, Kenzie Girgis fired a shot from point-blank range, and no Vike could defend it.

 
Tiebreaker shootout.

• The game result was a 1-1 tie, but for seeding purposes, a shootout determined a winner.
• In the shootout, Julia Boraston was the lone Vike to score on her attempt as UBC took the tiebreaker 3-1.

 
Notables:

• After the weekend, UBC claims the top spot in the Canada West standings, improving to 3-0-1. The Vikes fall to 2-1-1 with four regular-season games left to play.

 
The Vikes will stay home and face the Calgary Dinos on Oct. 3 and 4 at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field.
