VICTORIA – Battling heavy showers and a relentless Fraser Valley Cascades side, the UVic Vikes men's soccer team was dealt a 1-0 loss on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikes fired 28 shots during the heated exchange but Cascades 'keeper Mark Village held steady in net posting his second shutout of the season.
“We missed chances in the first half and it came back to haunt us,” Vikes head coach #
Bruce Wilson# said after the match.
The Vikes came close to breaking the deadlock in the 52nd minute when #Sam Wingham#'s cross found James Rhodes cutting across the Cascades' box. Village was able to make the save keeping the match level at 0-0.
Fraser Valley was on the offensive for much of the second half and Craig Robinson's shot almost pulled the Cascades ahead but struck the woodwork in the 52nd minute.
A 73rd minute corner was the game breaker as Cascades 6'6” striker Josh Atebe headed in the game's only goal. His first attempt was swatted away by Vikes' goalie #Dan Kilpatrick# but Atebe was there for the rebound and headed his team to a 1-0 win.
Three of the Vikes' seven shots on net came in the dying minutes but the home side was unable to draw level.
The 5-5-1 Vikes are on the road for the remainder of their season as they travel to Alberta to take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, Oct. 24 and the Calgary Dinos on Sunday, Oct. 25. Both games are scheduled for 2:15pm kickoffs.
