Dykstra, Janssens lead UVic over Winnipeg

CALGARY - Playing in their final contest of the year, the UVic Vikes women's basketball team ended 2009 with a 72-64 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen at the Holiday Hoops Tournament.

UVic post players #Kayla Dykstra# and #Natalie Janssens# combined for 37 points, as the Vikes finished 2-1 in tournament play. Dykstra scored a game high 19 points on 6-9 shooting, while Janssens' career scoring high of 18 points came on 6-10 shooting.

Eleven of Janssens' points came during the third quarter, in which the Vikes broke open a tight game and entered the final frame with a seven-point lead. The Vikes largest lead of the game came at the six-minute mark of the fourth with Dykstra's jumper giving UVic as 14-point advantage.

The Vikes made 43.3 percent of their shots and connected on seven three-pointers. #Carmen Lapthorne# made three three-pointers to finish with 13 points, while #Debbie Yeboah# made a pair to tally 8 points.

Caitlin Gooch led the visitors, scoring 15 points in Winnipeg's loss. Four Wesmen scorers realized double figures.

The second half of the Canada West schedule resumes January 8-9 with the Vikes welcoming the Regina Cougars and Brandon Bobcats to McKinnon Gym. Both games will be broadcast online at: govikesgo.com.
