Lapthorne, Dykstra lead in Vikes win

EDMONTON - #Carmen Lapthorne# scored a weekend-high 21 points and #Kayla Dykstra# added 19, as the UVic Vikes women's basketball team wrapped up pre-season play at Alberta with a 78-51 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Lapthorne made five three-pointers and shot 7-for-13 overall from the field. The 21-point performance from the Victoria native ended the Vikes' weekend at the Pandas Invitational on a winning note, as UVic split earlier games by defeating Western Ontario (77-61) and falling to Windsor (65-45).

Dykstra, the 2009 CIS Player of the year, turned in her best performance of the weekend with 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting while also collecting seven rebounds. Post #Sarah Semeniuk# added nine points in a starter's role, also grabbing five 'boards.

Laurentian's leading scorer was Kate Goggins, who contributed 14 points. The Voyageurs are the last team from outside the Canada West to win the national crown, as Laurentian won their seventh Bronze Baby in 1991.

The Vikes will play one more pre-season game before beginning league play. McKinnon Gym hosts Lethbridge Pronghorns next Saturday. Canada West conference play begins the following weekend, October 22-23, with the Vikes hosting the Calgary Dinos.
