VICTORIA - With a wild student section willing them to victory, the UVic Vikes women's basketball team did not disappoint in their home opener with a 73-57 romp over the Calgary Dinos.
BOXSCORE
Blue face paint and gold streamers is not all that glittered for the Vikes' Canada West kick-off on Friday night. Three Vikes players reached double digit scoring totals, led by an 18-point, 13-rebound performance from former CIS Player of the Year #
Kayla Dykstra#.
#
Carmen Lapthorne# was the offensive catalyst in the first half, scoring nine of her 13 points before entering the break with a 34-28 lead. #
Debbie Yeboah# took over in the late stages, scoring 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to stave off any hopes of a Calgary comeback.
Megan Lang was the lone Dinos scorer in double-figures with the senior guard coming off the bench to net 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Tamara Jarrett added seven points and a Calgary high eight rebounds.
Calgary was a force on the offensive glass with 20 'boards, and had fewer turnovers (18-24) but were hamstrung by poor production from the perimeter. The Dinos made just 4 of 28 attempts, and their reliance on the long ball led to a 31 percent shooting performance.
The two sides complete the weekend series Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m. and you can watch online at
