VICTORIA - In a battle of the Canada West's unbeatens, the no. 3 Regina Cougars defeated the no. 1 UVic Vikes women's basketball team 72-49 Friday night.

Regina improved to 7-0, and in the process ended UVic's 17-game regular season win streak that spanned back to last year. The Vikes climbed to the national no. 1 just this past Tuesday.
Joanna Zalesiak paced the Cougars attack with 15 points and five assists., also shooting 3-for-3 from the perimeter. Along with early threes from Gabrielle Gheyssen, the Cougars opened up an early lead and took a 41-27 advantage into the halftime break.
Gheyssen finished with four three-pointers and posted the game's scoring high with 16 points. Anne Mercer rounded out Regina's scoring leaders with 13 points.
Kayla Dykstra led the Vikes with 13 points and added 10 rebounds.
Vanessa Forstbauer scored 11 points and picked up seven 'boards. UVic shot just 28.4 percent from the field and suffered their first loss since Canada West play began.
