Pandas sweep Vikes

EDMONTON – The Alberta Pandas completed the weekend sweep of the Vikes, clinching the game on a last second three-pointer.

The Vikes came out strong in the Saturday night re-match against Alberta, opening up a 5 point lead by the end of the first quarter. The Pandas bounced back in the second, outscoring the Vikes 25-13, and went into the half leading by 7 points, 39-32.

A low scoring third quarter saw the Vikes claw back to within 4 points, 49-45. UVic continued to press in the fourth, leading by 6 with just over 4 minutes remaining in the game. Alberta tied it up, 62-62 with just under three minutes to play, but Debbie Yeboah put the Vikes back in the lead with two consecutive baskets. A Panda's layup with 15 seconds to go brought them within 2 points, and a last second three-pointer by Alberta's Anneka Bakker put the Panda's in the lead 67-66. Kayla Dykstra's desperation layup at the buzzer didn't drop, sealing the win for Alberta.

Alberta shot 7-18 from behind the arc, compared to 1-8 for the Vikes. Debbie Yeboah scored 18 points and Kayla Dykstra netted 12. Sarah Semeniuk pulled in 9 rebounds for UVic.

The Vikes finish the fall schedule with a 9-3 conference record. UVic heads to Calgary to compete in the Holiday Hoops tournament December 28-30, and return to conference play in McKinnon gym January 7 and 8 as they host the Trinity Western Spartans.
