Reigning champs snap Vikes’ undefeated run

JERICHO PARK – Two undefeated B.C. Premier League sides went head to head Saturday afternoon and the defending Rounsfell Cup champs Meralomas came out on top of a 22-9 decision snapping the UVic Vikes men's rugby team's 5-0 run.

With four starters unavailable for selection, the Vikes matched up evenly against the 2009 champs but were unable to convert pressure into points.

A miscue within the Lomas' ten metre line saw Sean Mercier steel possession before dashing 90 metres for the opening try of the match.

The Vikes fought back but their three penalties weren't enough to topple the Lomas on their home pitch. Aiden Vaun and Jo Nystrom each went over for the 'Lomas and Mike Hall capped off the effort kicking two penalties and a conversion.

For the first time in 34 outings, the Vikes were unable to cross over for a try.

“Meralomas are always a tough team to play against and today their defence was outstanding,” Vikes head coach #Doug Tate# said. “We must have been in their twenty-two a dozen times but we just weren't able to finish off our runs.”

The Vikes will look to improve on their 5-1 record next Saturday when they take on Gordon Head rivals Velox Valhallians. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:45pm at Velox RFC.
