Rounsefell Cup Preview: Vikes vs. Meraloma

VICTORIA - For the first time since 2003 the UVic Vikes men's rugby team will compete in the title match of the CDI BC Premier League, and will battle Meraloma for the right to hoist the Rounsefell Cup as provincial champs.

GAME INFORMATION
Sat. May 15 vs. Meraloma (Wallace Field) - 3pm

Tickets: $15 general admission, $10 for youth (under 15 or with valid student ID card)

SCOUTING THE VIKES
The Vikes pulled of the improbable last weekend with a 36-32 semifinal victory against top-seeded James Bay, in which they overcame a 20-3 first half deficit at Macdonald Park. Nathan Hirayama led the short-handed Vikes in scoring with three penalty kicks, three conversions and a drop goal. UVic had only two subs on the sidelines as the roster has been decimated by Under-20 national team selections, injuries and now summer work commitments, as exams ended in late April. However, no matter what the lineup has yielded, the run 'n gun Vikes have still put of plenty of points and boast the league's second-best offence at 39.4 points per game.

SCOUTING MERALOMA
The mighty 'Lomas are making their third connective appearance in the province's title match and come to Wallace Field as defending champs. On the strength of the league's second-best defence (13.3 p/g), Meraloma went 10-1 in 2010 with their only loss coming on the road at James Bay (19-12). To advance to this year's final, Meraloma rolled over Capilano in the semis with a lopsided 29-9 victory. Including last year's Rounsefell Cup victory, Meraloma has won 19 of their past 22 games.

HEAD TO HEAD
In their league match, back in late March at Connaught Park, Meraloma held the Vikes vaunted offence without a try for the only time this season and took a 22-9 victory. The win marked the fourth straight by the Vancouver club in the head-to-head meetings, with the Vikes last victory coming in 2006 at Wallace Field.
