Romeo, Oberg, Taylor score as Vikes blank Dinos

Sept. 25: UVic 3 Calgary 0

#Miguel Romeo# returned to Calgary to score the game-winning goal in front of family and friends, and #Craig Taylor# and #Jordie Oberg# added a goal a piece as the University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team blanked the Calgary Dinos 3-0 in Calgary on Sunday.

The Vikes put on an offensive show Sunday afternoon, using a strong southerly wind to their advantage to hand the No. 10 nationally-ranked Dinos their first home loss since Oct. 31, 2009.

#Elliot Mitrou# earned his second straight shutout on the weekend.

"We're pretty happy," said Vikes head coach #Bruce Wilson#. "We had a good win yesterday (over Lethbridge) and three goals today. We are feeling very good; it's been a while since we've come out of this trip with six points."

The first of the Vikes' three goals in the contest came in the 15th minute when #Kyle Kostis# sent a cross to a streaking Romeo, who tapped it past Dinos keeper Colin Hasick. Despite playing into the wind in the opening half - conditions that made life difficult for the goalkeepers and for first-half goalkicks - UVic entered the half time break up 1-0.

Possesion was fairly even between the two squads in the first half and the Dinos managed to have a number of close scoring opportunities themselves, with shots by Jason Genee and Ben Cole that both just sailed above the crossbar.

The Vikes controlled play with the wind in their favour in the second half. UVic had a great attempt in the beginning of the second half when freshman #Cam Hundal# headed a shot just wide of the goal.

UVic added some insurance in the 57th minute when Oberg scored on a rocket to the top right corner of the net. Calgary had a chance to draw within one midway through the frame when Lane Forsyth sent a header sailing over the net, and the Vikes put it away moments later.

Taylor picked off the ball from a Dinos defender with a nice tackle, then dribbled around a couple more Dinos before chipping a low shot off the right post behind Hasick in the 79th minute to spread the lead to 3-0 in favour of the Vikes.

Mitrou turned aside all four shots sent his way to record the shutout for UVic, while Hasick suffered his first loss of the season despite a six-save performance in the Calgary goal.

"It was a very difficult day to play with the wind howling here" Wilson said. "We played against the wind in the first half and it was very, very difficult to play, and very, very difficult to kick the ball out on goal kicks. We weathered the storm. Miguel scored in the first half and we managed to get out of the half without much trouble. The second half was relatively easy."

The loss drops Calgary to 4-2 on the season, but they remain alone in first place with 12 points. The Vikes improve to 3-2-1 with the victory, tied for second spot in the conference with 10 points.

"We were disappointed with the first weekend but did not play that bad," Wilson said. "We played well in three  halves of the four. I thought we were the best team in three of those four halves but we did not get the results. We were disappointed for sure. I found from a coaches point of view we did not look bad at all."

The six-point weekend "solidified our philosophy that we can use pretty much any of our players at any given time."

"We scored goals, gave away no goals and there were two shutouts for Elliot. That's always a good thing," Wilson said. "Hopefully we can now get some of the players we left behind involved. Lucas Barrett and Peter Richmond, Dan Kilpatrick who was sick this weekend. All of this shows our depth. We're really deep this year. Everyone seems to be on the same page right now."

Both teams head back to the coast for their next action in a week's time. The Vikes embark on a home-and-home series with the Fraser Valley Cascades, while Calgary will visit Trinity Western and UBC in a pair of key matches in the B.C. Lower Mainland.

"From everything I've heard they're quite young but when you play over on their tiny field it's a difficult field to play on we'll have to be at our best to win. Look forward to playing them on our filed the next day."
