The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team lost 3-1 to the Western Mustangs in the teams' first-ever CIS meeting on Nov. 2 at Varsity Centre in Toront, Ont. Despite a late first-half tying from rookie Vike
Amanda Watson (North Vancouver, BC) the Vikes were unable to capitalize on their opportunties and suffered their third-straight loss at the 2012 FHC-CIS national championship.

For the No. 5 seeded Western Mustangs, this becomes the school's first-ever victory on the national stage after only previously qualifying once in 2003.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 1-1-0 and sit just one point behind the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds (1-1-1) and No. 2 Toronto Varsity Blues (1-1-1), while Victoria drops to 0-3-0 and sits fifth in the standings.
Both teams are in tough tomorrow as the Mustangs take on the No. 3 Guelph Gryphons (2-0-0) and Thunderbirds, while the Vikes end their round robin draw versus the host Varsity Blues.
CIS all-Canadian
Katelyn Rogonowicz of Burlington, Ont., opened the scoring as she fired the ball past Victoria goalie
Sheriden Goodmanson (Victoria, BC) in only the second minute of play. The goal was Western's first of the tournament after the Mustangs fell 6-0 to the Varsity Blues yesterday.
Victoria evened the score, also notching their first goal of the championship, when rookie midfielder
Watson, snuck the ball past Western's Bethan Blackburn in the 31
st minute.
The Vikes previously fell 5-0 to the Guelph Gryphons and 4-0 to the defending national champion UBC Thunderbirds on Day one of the tournament.
The game remained 1-1 at the midway point of the contest.
Second-year Mustangs forward
Jessica Crawford of Oakville, Ont., got the go-ahead goal as she tipped a
Megan Duffy shot to find the back of the net in the 43
rd minute. Vancouver native
Safia Mohamed added an insurance marker in the 57
th minute to secure the 3-1 win.
“We played individually today and you can't beat any team when you play individually,” said Victoria head coach
Lynne Beecroft. “I'm hoping we can come out and play hard tomorrow. At the end of the day it comes down to goal differential.”
