Vikes capitalize on Huskies turnovers

Nov. 24: Victoria 70 - Saskatchewan 59

The No. 7 University of Victoria Vikes capitalized on turnovers to defeat the No. 9 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies 70-59 Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Although the Huskies had the lead in the game until the seven-minute mark of the third quarter, miscues started to catch up to Saskatchewan.  Victoria finished the night scoring 23 points from the Huskies' 21 turnovers in the game.

The Vikes opened the scoring in the game but Saskatchewan quickly found their stride leading 18-16 after the first quarter and 33-29 at halftime.

It was Victoria's game in the second half.

On a quick transition up the court after a Saskatchewan turnover, the Vikes took the lead in the game for the since the first basket of the game with just under seven minutes left in the third. Victoria continued to find the net leading 50-44 at the end of the third quarter. The Vikes finished the fourth outscoring the Huskies 20-15.

With the win Victoria improves to 6-2 on the season, while the Huskies drop to 3-5.

Victoria's Debbie Yeboah (Winnipeg, MB) and Jessica Renfrew (Victoria, BC) were impressive tallying 21 and 20 points respectively. Chelsea McMullen (Prince George, B.C.) added another 18 points for the Vikes. Cassandra Goodis (Penticton, BC) led the Vikes on the boards with eight rebounds.

Dalyce Emmerson led the Huskies with 18 points and nine rebounds. Kiera Lyons added another 10 points, while Kelsey Trulsrud chipped in with eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Victoria finished the game shooting 42%, while the Huskies shot at 41%. The Huskies beat the Vikes on the boards out rebounding Victoria 39-35.

The Huskies travel to face the Mount Royal Cougars and the UNBC Timberwolves next weekend, while the Vikes return home to host the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Calgary Dinos.
