VICTORIA – Taking on Capilano RFC at Wallace Field in their first home game of the season, the Vikes toppled the reigning Rounsefell Cup champions with a score of 30 – 24. With the win, the Vikes now go 1-1-0.
The Vikes started the game down by three points when an early successful penalty kick put the Caps on the board less than 10 minutes into the first half. The Vikes were quick to respond with a try by
Aaron Johnston after two quick handoffs from
Phil Mack to
Remi Anctil. A convert by
Patrick Kay put the Vikes up 7-3.
Gaining yardage in the Vikes' defensive zone with a strong maul, the Caps found themselves just short of the touchline. Carrying the ball out to the right the Caps were unsuccessful but after a quick switch the visiting team was across the line with a try by second rower Adam Zaruba. Earning the convert, the Caps were ahead by 3.
The Vikes missed a chance to tie with an unsuccessful penalty kick but minutes later made good on the next and caught up to the Caps. A try by
Keaton Styles after a play down the left wing and a conversion by
Patrick Kay gave the Vikes a 7-point lead.
A standout performance by scrumhalf
Phil Mack was the difference maker. With two solo effort tries that included an impressive 50-yard run, Mack was a force to be reckoned with and caused havoc for the visiting Caps. Glen McKinnon, Caps eightman, played well for the Vancouver side.
“We did a good job of converting our chances, way better than last weekend,” said Vikes head coach Doug Tate. “
Phil Mack was unbelievable, I mean, that was a career game. Defensively,
Chase Kelliher and
Liam Murray played very well.”
The Vikes' next game is Sept. 29, Wallace Field, at 2:45 p.m., against Boot rivals UBC while the Capilanos take on UBCOB Ravens at Vancouver's Jericho Park.
