Fisher drains two to down Dinos in weekend sweep

Oct. 13: Victoria 4 – Calgary 1 (Victoria, B.C.)

Third-year forward Stefanie Hatch in action against Calgary's Lindsay Koch.
VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's field hockey team earned their six-point weekend after defeating the Calgary Dinos 4-1 on Oct. 13 at UVic's field hockey pitch. Third-year Vike Emily Fisher found the back of the net twice and set up a third for the win as the Vikes now improve 4-0-1 while the Dinos end their season at 0-8-0.

MATCH SHEET

The Vikes tallied in the eighth minute on a penalty corner goal from Kathleen Leahy, while Fisher notched two field goals and set up Marin Davidson for the fourth. Defender's Alana Macdonald and Rosie Beale did well to provide some composure in the backfield to break the Dinos press, while Sheriden Goodmanson came up big with two point-blank saves against the run of play.

Dinos forward and captain Keara Chicquen was the hero of the weekend as she capitalized on a penalty corner to cut the Vikes' lead by one. Senior netminder Stephanie Petrowitsch added seven key saves in the match including several two-on-one chances for the Vikes.

The Vikes opened the scoring on their first penalty corner at the eighth minute mark. After going scoreless on 10-straight corners in yesterday's match, the Vikes regrouped as a short-side give-and-go between Andrea Jones and Leahy put the Vikes up by one.

Holding on to their early lead the Vikes showed good composure and patience to attack. The Dinos held the perimeter of their circle well as veterans Courtney Duggan and Lindsay Koch were, again, continual thwarts to a speedy and relentless Vikes front line.

Davidson set up the second goal of the game in the 26th minute with a reverse stick sweep from the left side baseline that forced Petrowitsch off her line. The ball was saved initially but the rebound was collected by Fisher who patiently waited for a gap at the far post to slot the ball for the Vikes to take a 2-0 lead.

Prior to the break the Dinos earned their first corner and made good on the attempt as Chiquen received the ball at the top of the circle and eliminated the Vikes' first runner with a pull to her left. Chicquen's reverse stick sweep bounced past Goodmanson to cut the Vikes' lead to one. This was Chicquen's second goal in as many games.

Following the half-time break the Vikes continued to pressure the Dinos and lifted their lead to two after Fisher one-timed a loose ball in the circle through traffic. After scoring her second, the Ontario native set up the Vikes final goal after receiving a long ball down the left side of the pitch. The ball was fired across the face of goal for a sprinting Davidson to one-time into the net at the far post.

The Dinos had their best opportunity in the second half when a transfer ball to Annie Walters-Shumka was mishandled in the circle. Chicquen pounced on the opportunity and from 10 meters out fired a shot at Goodmanson, who made the save on the shot and the follow-up attempt.

The Vikes had one last opportunity towards the end of the match when Fisher threaded the needle on a pass to Amanda Kurianowicz. Petrowitsch slid out on the one-on-one challenge to keep the Vikes off the board and hold the final score to 4-1.

The Dinos now end their season with a 0-8-0 record, while the 4-0-1 Vikes have three more conference games left to play against the UBC Thunderbirds. Next weekend, Oct. 18-19, Victoria will visit the T-Birds at Wright Field for a double-header and will then turn around to host on Oct. 26 for one match. Following, both teams will compete at the 2013 CIS/FHC National Championship in Victoria from Oct. 31-Nov. 3.
