Vikes complete come-back win against Capilano RFC

Oct. 19: Vikes 34 - Capilano RFC 23 (Wallace Field)

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's rugby team earned a second win in their CDI Premier League season, rolling to a 34-23 victory over Capilano RFC, Oct. 19 at Wallace Field. Capilano carried the lead after the first half but a strong second half from the home side proved to be the difference in the match.

FULL SCHEDULE  /  STANDINGS

Vikes Dustin Dobravsky, Dan Hrycyk, Luke McCloskey, Kane Wyatt and Willem du Plessis registered tries for UVic in the match, while Fergus Hall posted three conversions and a penalty kick from 30-yards early in the first half.

Both sides wasted no time getting on the board, as Capilano winger Hamish Johnston finished a quick drive up the field, putting the visiting side on the board less than a minute in. The Vikes responded immediately as centre Dobravsky registered the Vikes' first try less than two mintues into the game.

"I haven't seen a game where there are two tries in two minutes ever," said Vikes head coach Doug Tate. "Credit to Capilano, they were ready to go today and they stuck it to us a little bit at the beginning."

Capilano lead the Vikes 18-17 at the half and appeared to be in a position to hand the Vikes their first loss of the season. The Vikes rallied back following kick-off of the second half, posting 27 points and holding Capilano to only five.

"At the 50-minute mark they started to look a little tired and we started to play really well right from the beginning of the second half," added Tate. "I think our fitness and putting fresh subs in might have been the difference in the game."

Saturday's match featured outside-half Pat Kay, who returned to the Vikes lineup after playing in Brisbane with the Canadian national seven's squad.  Kay's addition to the roster gave the Vikes additional depth within their lineup. The win puts the Vikes at 2-0 in their 2013 CDI Premier season as they look to return to the playoffs.

Next up, the men head to Macdonald Park to face James Bay Athletic Association, Oct. 26 at 2:45 p.m.
