Vikes face James Bay Athletic Association in third game of Premier League season

Oct. 26: Vikes @ James Bay AA (Macdonald Park, Victoria)

The University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team will face James Bay Athletic Association at Macdonald Park, Oct.  26 at 2:45 p.m., looking to push their CDI Premier League season record to a perfect 3-0 to begin the season.

In their previous match versus Capilano RFC, the Vikes welcomed back third-year Vike and Canadian national sevens player Pat Kay, who had been playing on the International Rugby Board circuit with the Canadian national sevens squad. Kay was a stand-out performer for his team, breaking tackles and making key offensive plays throughout the match. UVic will likely lose several key starters this weekend such as Kay, due to national team commitments with the 2013 North America Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) sevens tournament kicking off in November. Unlike last season that saw the Vikes struggle without regular starters, this season's roster has stepped up to fill the voids on offense and defense.

"I think a year and some growth amongst these guys has been huge," said men's assistant coach Rick Farrelly. "They are bigger, stronger, they've got more experience and there is a confidence that wasn't there last year."

Coming off a 40-15, Oct. 19 victory last week against Castaway Wanderers, James Bay will be looking to push their season record to 2-1. Last week saw the home team go down 15-8 at the half before storming back in the second half of play with six tries in total to secure their first victory of the season. Former Vike Phil Mack returned from a professional contract with European club Ospreys to score a penalty goal in the victory.

The last meeting between the two clubs saw the Vikes downing James Bay 28-17 in their Sept. 14 home-opener at Centennial Stadium. Kick-off for this Saturday's match is set for 2:45 p.m. at Macdonald Park, Victoria.
