Vikes fall short to nationally-ranked Cascades

Nov. 9: Victoria 61 – Fraser Valley 77 (McKinnon Gym – Victoria, B.C.)

VICTORIA – The University of Fraser Valley Cascades completed the weekend sweep with a 77-61 victory over the Victoria Vikes women's basketball team at McKinnon Gym on Nov. 9. Sarah Wierks was the leader for the visitors for the second night in a row dominating with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Cascades are now 4-0 in the Canada West, while the Vikes fall 1-3.

BOX SCORE

The Vikes seemed to keep the Cascades on a short leash but were unable to come out in front after trailing by two at the end of the first, eight at the end of the second and eleven at the end of the third. Jessica Renfrew led the Vikes in scoring with 14 points, while Jenny Lewis chipped in for 12. Second year Ashley McGinnis came off the pine to add nine points and go three-for-four from distance.

For the Cascades, Wierks was a force with the team's only double-double and logging 28 minutes. Kayle Sartori and Nicole Wierks also hit double digits, each with 14 points on the night, while Kaitlyn Brink added 10. The Cascades were 73 per cent from the line and 43 per cent from the field and out-scored the Vikes in all four quarters.

"In every aspect we are 50 to 60 per cent efficiency and that's at best," said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair, whose team now falls to a 1-3 Canada West record. "We are not finishing well, taking care of the ball well or doing the simple things right. I am proud of the girls for their effort and we are a bit banged up but I am tired of saying that."

The Vikes were forced to compete without veteran, starting point guard Cassandra Goodis, who was out with a shoulder injury from last night's game.

Renfrew kept the home team in check draining three shots from beyond the arc in the first quarter, while the Cascades gained eight of their points from the line. Renfrew's timely three cut Fraser Valley's lead to two as the Vikes trailed 20-18 entering the second.

The Vikes continued to move the ball well, earning several opportunities but a lack of finish plagued the home team that trailed by as much as 12 in the second frame. Fraser valley had 21 first-half points from their bench.

The Cascades hit three daggering treys to go three-for-eight in the opening half and gain a 41-33 advantage after two quarters. Sartori finished the first half with 13 points, while Sarah Wiercks neared double digits with eight points and seven rebounds.

Early in the third the Vikes came within as little as three after a Crisp three-pointer but Shayna Litman responded with a nice lay up to set the Cascades up for a 7-0 run on route to a 60-49 lead. The Vikes were out-scored 19-16 in the third.

In the fourth the Vikes were all over the court but again, unable to capitalize. The trio of Sartori, Sarah Wierks and Nicole Wierks continued to dominate as the Cascades earned 36 points in the paint and 16 off Vikes turnovers.

The Cascades completed the weekend sweep with a 77-61 victory to now improve 4-0 in the Canada West, while the Vikes now fall 1-3. Up next the Vikes will hit the road for a pair of games against UBC Okanagan, Nov. 8-9, while the Cascades will host Mount Royal for a double-header.
