VICTORIA, B.C. – Taking on the No. 6 Castaway Wanderers the University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team were downed 48-14 by the more physical Oak Bay side.
FULL SCHEDULE /
ROSTER
Rather than adding another win to their recent string of successes, the Vikes were looking a bit worn after a busy few weeks. The Castaway Wanderers played a far more physical game than the UVic men were prepared for and after the first half of play the Vikes had only nine points to the Castaway's 30.
The lone nine were put up by rookie standout
Fergus Hall (Victoria, B.C.) as he made good on three penalty kicks. Scoring five tries in the first 40 minutes of play, the Oak Bay side were far more direct with their attack and made the Vikes pay for their mistakes.
In the second half the Vikes refused to say die and came out strong with their line up boasting speed from wingers
Beau Parker (Vancouver, BC) and
Kane Wyatt (Shawnigan Lake, B.C.). Unfortunately, a try by Parker in the early minutes of the second 40 was reversed and an unfortunate yellow card given to third-year
Doug Fraser (Ladysmith, BC) did not help the Vikes' chances.
Parker was successful in crossing the line a second time but it was too little too late for the Vikes as the Castaways continued to run the play for a final score of 48-14.
Next up for the University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team is a home game against Burnaby Lake, Mar. 16.
