With both the No. 5 Castaway Wanderers and the No.4 Meraloma RC victorious in their respective matches, the Vikes are now a eight points shy of a playoff spot as they head into their final game next weekend against local rivals James Bay AA.
A 12-try match, today's game was decided in the final 15 minutes when the 'Caps crossed the goal line three times in quick succession and the Vikes had no chance to make it back from the 16-point deficit.
Capilano opened scoring with tries from
Taylor Dalziel and
Robbie McCall and a conversion from
Matt Simms. The Vikes answered with 20 unchallenged points as
Beau Parker notched a try and sophomore standout
Patrick Kay recorded another two along with a conversion and a penalty.
Heading into the break, the Capilanos had put another 14 points on the board to lead the Vikes 26-20. UVic kick-started the second half as
Phil Mack chipped the ball over four attackers and impact centre
Remi Anctil dove on the ball for a try. With the conversion made good by Kay, the Vikes were ahead 27-26.
A penalty for Capilano and then another try and conversion saw them take the lead 36-27. A successful penalty kick from Kay gave the Vikes another three points but with two more tries from the 'Caps the home side was out of reach. A last-minute try from Parker in the dying minutes of the game was not enough for UVic to make the comeback as they were handed a 46-35 loss.
The final game of the Vikes' 2012-13 Premier League season is next weekend, Apr. 20, 2:45 p.m. at MacDonald Park against perennial Island rivals James Bay AA.
