Vikes take the reigns after game two of Barnard Cup series

Victoria 45 - Castaway Wanderers 10 (Windsor Park, Victoria, B.C.)

VICTORIA - Six different scorers tallied tries today as the University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team won the second match of their quest towards the prestigious Barnard Cup on Sept. 21 at Windsor Park. The Vikes men came out to defeat the Castaway Wanderers 45-10 and now post a 2-0 record in the three-game series.

Capitalizing on Castaway turnovers, the Vikes moved the ball well across the field, beating the experienced Castaways up the flanks and middle and carrying the majority of the play throughout the game.  The Wanders pressed at times with promising chances but were unable to break the defensive line of the visiting Vikes, often causing turnovers that resulted in scoring plays for UVic.

Vike Jamie MacKenzie was the game's standout presence for the Vikes, using his mobility to make several tackles in addition to his try in the victory.  Also scoring tries for the Vikes were Doug Fraser, Kane Wyatt, Dan Hrycyk, Chase Keliher and Kaprieli Vateleki. Newcomer Guiseppe du Toit also impressed in his Vike debut, scoring six conversions and adding a penalty kick in the victory.

Saturday's tilt marked the second win in a row for the UVic squad, coming on the heels of last weeks impressive 28-17 victory over James Bay Athletic Association in the first game of the Barnard Cup series.

"Some of the guys that haven't played too much at this level are stepping up," said Vikes head coach Doug Tate, who enters his 20th season at the helm. "We have good depth and a lot of reserves who are stepping up and playing really well for us."

Next up, the Vikes face off against Velox Rugby Club, Sept. 28, 2:45 pm at Velox Rugby club.
