VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team ousted island rivals James Bay Athletic Association 27-19 in an exciting opener to the CDI Premier league. The last time the two teams met James Bay edged the Vikes 34-30 in game 2 of the Barnard Cup series.
Third-year fullback
Fergus Hall converted all three tries and kicked two penalties, while
Macbryan Bos,
Nathan Stewart and
Crosby Stewart each earned tries for Victoria.
"The game was very physical and the Vikes put up some spirited defence to over turn some key James Bay possessions," said
Doug Tate, Vikes men's rugby head coach. " We put them under pressure in critical times of the game."
Doug Fraser was acknowledged for making some timely and physical tackles to set the tone and allow the Vikes defence to overall be the difference in the game.
"It was a great start to our premier league season and it looks like there is going to be a lot of parody in the league," added Tate.
Up next the Vikes will host the Castaway Wanderers as part of the CDI Premier League. The match up will be the Vikes' home opener on Oct. 18 with kick off set for 2:45 p.m. at UVic's Wallace Field. Later in November the Vikes will also host the Barnard Cup final after winning the round-robin games in point differential.
