Vikes look for second consecutive win against Wanderers

Mar. 29: Victoria Vikes @ Castaway Wanderers (Windsor Park)

VICTORIA – Following their first victory of the new year, the University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby squad will look to win back-to-back games for the first time since November when they face the 6-5 Castaway Wanderers at Windsor Park, Mar. 29 at 1:00 p.m.

Last week the Victoria connected on offence against the eighth-place Meraloma Rugby Club, scoring all 31 points in a strong opening half of play. The second half was a defensive clinic on both sides of the ball, with neither squad able to post a point down the stretch.

"I was really happy with our defence played last week," said Vikes assistant coach Rick Farrally. "Meraloma were inside our half and on our goal line several times and we were stiff, we'll have to do that again this week."

The Castaways currently sit in fourth-place in the BCRU standings, holidng a four-point advantage over the Vikes. Like the majority of their season, the Wanderers will enter Saturday's match without the service of Canadian Sevens team member Ciaran Hearn, who leads the squad in points scored this season despite having played just two matches due to national team commitments.

Aside from Hearn, offence for the Wanderers has been spread among the roster, with Keenan Horton and Jonny Morris ranking second on the team with 20 points apiece. Several other Wanderers also sit at double-digits for scoring.

"We're going to have to play fast this weekend," said Crawley. "We're going to have to run-and-gun and take a couple risks."

Vikes Pat Kay and Jeff Nishma-Miller return to Victoria's lineup for this weekend's match, while Farrally takes over on the Vikes sidelines with head coach Doug Tate in Hong Kong, assisting with the B.C. Elite Sevens.

The Wanderers and Vikes have met twice this year, with Victoria earning decisive 45-10 and 48-12 victories. This weekend's rematch begins at 1:00 p.m.
