VICTORIA- The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team will travel to Alberta to take on the Calgary Dinos this weekend, Jan. 23-24. The Vikes women enter the weekend with a four-game winning streak that has seen their season record improve to 6-6 following an early struggle in the season.
The Vikes women sit in sixth place in the Canada West Pioneers Division just below the Dinos, who post an 8-5 record. The Vikes have a game in hand and back-to-back victories will be crucial to climb in the division standings.
Last weekend, fifth-year forward
Jessica Renfrew dropped a career-high 36 points to silence the then CIS No. 7-ranked Winnipeg Wesmen, 71-48, in the first match-up of the two-game series. The following night, six-foot-one forward
Nicole Karstein led the Vikes in scoring as she posted 19 points and 10 rebounds. Fifth-year point guard
Cassandra Goodis directed the floor to post 10 points and nine assists; while Renfrew again scored double-digits alongside first-year standout guard Amira Giannatassio, posting 13 and 12 points respectively, to seal the home sweep over Winnipeg 72-65.
Also entering the weekend with a series sweep, the Dinos picked up their season's first road game wins over the Lethbridge Pronghorns last week to bring their season record to 8-5. Fourth-year post Kelsey Lund posted 16 points against the Pronghorns the first night while fellow Dinos veterans Lawrie Saunders and Kristie Sheils both added double-digits as well. Sheils sits second in the conference in three-point shooting percentage, scoring 46.2 percent of her three-point attempts. The following night, fourth-year guard Claire Colborne led the team in scoring as she put up 20 points on the scoreboard while veterans Ashley Hirons and Sheils also posted double-digits.
